Harding's Glover commits to West Virginia
By DAVID BAUGH Tribune Chronicle correspondent
Warren G. Harding High School senior Sidney Glover became the area's first early football commitment for 2007 on Sunday when he accepted a scholarship offer from Indiana University.
Glover, who plays quarterback and strong safety for the Raiders, is projected as a strong safety by the Hoosiers. Glover and Pennsylvania standout Dane Conwell, who also reportedly committed on Sunday, are the first two '07 players to make verbal commitments to Indiana.
‘‘I think that it's a great fit for me,'' Glover said. ‘‘I went up there last month to see my cousin Treymaine Warfield run track, so I got a chance to see what the campus was like. I love the coaching staff and the facilities. My family, coaches and friends have given me their full support.''
As a junior in 2005, the 5-foot-11, 205-pound Glover produced on both sides of the ball. While rotating at quarterback, he went 27-of-46 for 367 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 418 yards and four touchdowns on 80 carries.
Glover made 58 tackles (33 solo) and had an interception and a blocked punt. He thinks that his experience at the quarterback position has helped him become an even better strong safety.
‘‘Playing quarterback has helped me out with different coverages,'' Glover explained. ‘‘I have quick reactions to the ball because I have a feel for how quarterbacks think.''
Harding coach Thom McDaniels said Glover is a well-rounded player.
‘‘He's a tough, he's a strong guy and he's mobile and smart,'' McDaniels said. ‘‘They seem to be really excited about him at Indiana. They seem to think he' s just what they're looking for at strong safety.''
McDaniels said Glover is on pace to graduate from high school in December and plans to enroll at Indiana in January.
‘‘With me being a mid-year graduate, it gives me a chance to work out with the team all year,'' Glover said. ‘‘It will give me an edge over other recruits coming in because it will allow me to get a feel for the system.''
Glover hopes an early start can lead to early playing time.
‘‘I want to play my freshman year,'' he said. ‘‘I think that I'll have a chance to start as a true freshman, so that's a goal that I'll be working towards.''

Sidney Glover- At 5'11", 203 pounds, ATH Sidney Glover
is one of harderst hitters ever at Warren Harding. He
is very athletic on offense, but his future is at SS.
He has nice coverage skills and, as mentioned earlier,
delivers vicious hits. Rotating as an option style QB
in 05, Glover went 27 of 46 for 367 yards & 6 TDs,
adding 418 yards & 4 TDs on 80 carries. Defensively,
he tallied 58 tackles (33 solo), 1 INT, and a blocked
punt. He has worked extremely hard this offseason (he
did 19 reps of 225 earlier this month) and many
colleges are keying in on him. |
